A. How did the disks grow so large at this time?
The disk’s growth rate is quite dramatic at this time. Over most years, with very little downtime, disks grow rapidly, thus reducing costs by making the drive harder to move from one place to another.
On average, over a 30 year period, more than 8 million drive units (20 trillion disks) were added to the market.
As a result, over a 40 year period disk size has halved, from 5.6 TB (about 20x the original capacity) in 2000-2006 to 2.3 TB today (about 22x more capacity, or 25X as compared to a comparable 2000-2006 record), and disk capacity doubled.
What can be done to prevent damage?
